Reading 1997

This is a sample of the writing produced at the ATypI conference in Reading on the 13 September 1997. There is a gallery of photos of the performance and a page with some movies of the performance.

We covered the floor of the student union hall with three rolls of cartridge paper. each roll measured approximately 4' x 100' (1.21m X 30.48m) giving a total area in excess of 1200 square feet (110 square metres). The depth of the writing area was 12' (3.65m) this meant that the x-height of the letters was approximately 4' (1.2m). The word written was 'hamburgefonts'.

the writing instrument was a brush 2' (0.6m) in width, constructed from four 6" (15cm) brushes held together in a wooden frame and attached to a wooden pole. the ink was black emulsion paint and water and the inkpot was a planting trough. my assistant was phill grimshaw, you can see him moving my inkpot. i would like to thank peter cartwright, who along with phill, acted as brush technician at the last minute when the tool went all wobbly on me. i am also thankful to conrad taylor for capturing the movie and ann pillar and linnea lundquist for the photographs.
